臉譜色彩豐富，圖案不一，容易讓人感覺混亂、神秘。但實際上，臉譜可以歸納為一些基本的類型，由這些基本的類型，根據人物的性格、氣質等，再變化出許許多多的臉譜。每個臉譜都是以戲中人物的長相、性格等為依據的臉譜的色彩也有各自的含義。一般來講，顏色象徵了性格。
比如紅色，表示人物的忠勇義烈；黑色表示人物忠耿、正直、勇猛；黃色表示人物殘暴兇狠等等。當然這種對性格的象徵也不是絕對的。
